When a child has is addicted to drugs or alcohol, the feelings that manifest in the parent can be overwhelming. Parents are angry with their children for making the choice to use in the first place, mad at themselves for not being 'better' parents. They're sad about how quickly their child has degenerated: dropping out of school teams, failing classes, lying, and distempered. The emotional, physical and mental state of their child is often mimicked in the parents as worry about their child's addiction becomes an addiction in itself. When should parents seek counseling? Whenever they feel like the situation with their child is getting to a point that they need outside guidance. Counseling for parents with kids on drugs is crucial to child development. Parental help for children with addictions can emotionally, physically, and mentally assist parents in coping with the situation. Counselors and therapists can provide an objective view and help parents take the emotion out of their decisions when handling their child's drug use. Is treatment necessary? An intervention? Is the child addicted or using occasionally? What substance is he or she using, whether drugs or alcohol? With whom? Where? Should the child using drugs accompany parents to counseling? That depends. Some children may refuse to go, and sometimes, parents need a place that's their own to vent and seek guidance. Parents may begin counseling and then invite their child to join in on a session if advised by the counselor, or the child may even show an interest in attending. Parents should speak to their counselor and decide on a case by case basis whether or not the child should attend. Where can parents find counseling? There are a number of community and private resources available to parents. Contact any of the organizations below for local groups and counselors. |
